“Implementing solutions at the speed of business.” It’s a lofty goal that requires a different way of thinking. Old habits are hard to change, and in tough regulatory environments, may not be easy. The days of ridged 24-month product roadmaps with restrictive work breakdown structures are fading into the past at an accelerated pace as businesses recognize that the ability to reprioritize quickly due to the disruptive nature of today’s business climate demands an Agile approach to product development.
“Maximizing the amount of work not done” is a key Tennent in Agile (this is not to be confused with procrastination). Simply re-stated, it means that we need to proactively delay those actions and decisions that have a high likelihood of being altered in the future until such time that they become stable. Increasing our Agility, in part, means taking this tenant seriously and working on only the highest priority activities that have a strong likelihood of not changing. Changes are made on a shorter, near-term design ‘Runway’. The shorter architectural and technical runway allows for emergent changes – as teams (product and technology) learn more from actual working software, they can pivot to leverage better, cheaper, faster alternatives without taking an expensive hit to timelines and budgets.
