Event Summary April 22, 2015
September 2015 NSSIG Meeting
Chicago, IL
On September 10, 2015, Trexin Chief Security Officer, Glenn Kapetansky, discussed “Managing Security in a Risky World” with the Harvard Business School (HBS) Club of Chicago. The event was judged a success by all present, peppering Glenn with thoughtful comments and insights, as he, in turn, challenged them to leverage their existing management experience to master the new world of cyber risks. Glenn’s point of view stems from a handful of insights:
– Business entities are likely already hacked and vulnerable.
– Many of the underlying technological and social assumptions in traditional Information Security protections are no longer valid.
– But we can leverage solutions from the physical world, learned throughout history, to manage cyber risks along with other corporate risks.
– Detection, triage, response, and communication are the new cornerstones.
– Continuously evolving metrics become the new levers to manage cyber risks.
By the end of the discussion, the HBS participants were coming up with their own historical parallels, and applying these insights to personal as well as business situations. They felt their time spent with Glenn was well worth it!
