The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requiring manufacturers to inventory all per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in their products, processes, and supply chains by May 2025. Further federal regulation seems likely. Some States already banning PFAS use in food containers are extending the ban to numerous other product categories by the end of 2025 and plan to ban nearly all PFAS use by 2032. Internationally, several countries in Europe have also proposed near-total PFAS restrictions, and there is now speculation that the European Union could impose a continent-wide ban. PFAS litigation and settlements are ongoing, and major PFAS producers are opting to completely phase out production by the end of 2024.
